Title: Fool Me Once
Series: Tarot Mystery
Author: Steve Hockensmith & Lisa Falco
Publisher: Midnight Ink
Publication Date: 08/01/2015
Synopsis from Goodreads: After taking over the White Magic Five & Dime, Alanis McLachlan is trying to make up for her mother’s con jobs by tracking down old customers and making amends. When Martha, one of the most loyal clients, comes looking for a way out of her abusive marriage, Alanis does everything she can to help.
But helping Martha leads to unforeseen consequences . . . including murder. When Martha’s husband is found dead, the police show up at Alanis’s door. And things only get more complicated as she tries to clear her name from the top of the suspect list. With her growing mastery of the tarot and the Fool card to guide her, can Alanis find her way to the truth before the killer gets to her first?
I’m a witch. I fully admit this. I love Tarot cards. I collect Tarot decks. I also admit that like the main character, it took me a while to start getting a proper feel for the Tarot. But once I did – I got pretty darn good at it.
Fool Me Once is a Tarot Mystery – the main character, Alanis, has inherited her con artist mother’s shop and is trying to do right by the people her mother conned. What she ends up with is a need to get a friend out of a murder charge and keep herself out of danger.
This book was very good. The Tarot readings were especially good. Very seldom have I seen a book that includes Tarot readings that actually make sense. It really shows that the authors know what they’re doing with the Tarot.
The action scenes were mostly tame, but that’s a good thing because they simply didn’t need to be big, juicy action scenes. The climax was perfect for the book – it came out of nowhere and honestly never occurred to me that the murderer would be who it turned out to be.
This book is good for a quick read and will knock you off your socks. It will be available for purchase on August 8, 2015 – be ready to grab your copy!
